Barbell Curl

The barbell curl is a great bicep exercise. Done standing up and without swinging, the exercise also works a lot of stabilizer muscles. While this exercise isn’t a core one as part of the Firefighter Hybrid Workout, we do it to balance the arms and the many exercises we do that target the triceps.

This exercise should never be done with an ez-curl bar, we insist on an actual barbell. The reason for this is that the bicep has two primary functions – the curl the arm in on itself and to supinate the palm. By using an ez-curl bar, you are eliminating one of the functions. As an example of this, have a look at your bicep when your arm is extended, rotate your wrist – you’ll notice maximal contraction when the palm is supinated.
